The Willow Specialist

Steve Pickup established the Willowbank in 1985 to collect grow and research the many varieties of willow and their uses. In the early '90's he began experimenting with making living willow structures and is now one of the leading exponents of this craft.

He undertakes individual commissions of all sizes, designing and installing tailor made structures for private clients, schools and public spaces. More recently he has developed a range of DIY living willow kits, which come with thoroughly tested and clear instructions for the complete beginner. In collaboration with hands on video he has produced an instructional DVD "Making Living Willow Sculptures."

Steve also cultivates many varieties of willows and has built up an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of their many different uses and the individual strengths of the many different varieties.

In Steve's latest projects he is collaborating with Sector39 sustainable garden design, creating interactive landscapes for environmental education in schools.

As well as running regular courses in living and dry willow work at his farm in the Wye valley, Steve also offers training sessions facilitating groups to design and make their own structures on their own site.
